Review of The Aviator (2004) by Josh K — 22 Dec 2013
It's long (close to three hours), but it still proves Martin Scorsese as a great filmmaker. Leonardo DiCaprio depicts a Howard Hughes, an eccentric filmmaker, aviator and billionaire who starts to slowly fall into madness.
Cate Blanchett depicts Catherine Hepburne, one of Hughes's many girlfriends and a well-known actress. DiCaprio brings a great sense of madness to the part of Hughes, while also perfectly showing his slow descent from calmness to madness.
Blanchett steals most of the scenes she's in as Hepburn, which is probably one of her best performances. The supporting cast is also terrific, with John C. Reilly as Hughes's business executive, Alan Alda as a senator who tries to ruin Hughes and Kate Beckinsale as actress Ava Gardner.
The cinematography is enriching, perfectly capturing the time period, while Howard Shore's music is breathtaking, as well as the source music. This film proves that Scorsese is still one of the greatest filmmakers of our time.
