The Aviator (2004) ??? 1/2 C-170m. D: Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, John C. Reilly, Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda, Ian Holm. DiCaprio gives the best performance of his career in this extraordinary biopic of Howard Hughes, legendary director who would get anything he wanted his and only his way.
This untouchability lead him to insanity. Scorsese, along with cinematographer Robert Richardson and editor Thelma Shoonmaker, have created an entire isolated world under the nose of Hughes, with vivid, fascinating results.
That such an intense piece of work could rest on the shoulders of one actor alone is the most impressive accomplishment of this one-of-a-kind film's many great achievements. Blanchett is completely remarkable, playing Katharine Hepburn.
Despite its running time, film moves at a beautiful pace. Five Oscar wins for Best Actress (Blanchett), Cinematography, Editing, Art Direction, and Costumes- although Picture and Director *should have won.
