Review of The Aviator (2004) by Garrett C — 23 Feb 2012
The Aviator is a modern masterpiece. Where most directors would create a study of Howard Hughes' OCD, Scorsese crafts a film that both celebrates the man and his achievements while also showing the dark side of genius.
His clearly two strip and later three strip technicolor scenes are perfect for evoking the period without going to black and white. DiCaprio did a great acting job (after seeing this and Gilbert Grape one would really think he does have issues) and especially Cate Blanchett.
I've seen several Katharine Hepburn movies and I sometimes forgot she wasn't actually Hepburn. The scenes where Hughes is at his absolute most ridiculous (waiting for clouds, re-shooting the movie for sound, continuing on the Hercules) have surprisingly good comedic value.
The Aviator is certainly one of the greatest biopics ever made.
