Review of The Avengers (1998) by Bill G — 07 Oct 2008
Not the atrocity many reviews suggest, but a definite misfire. Clearly the creative minds behind it wanted to incorporate real elements of the original, but they did so without any consistent rhyme or reason; or apparent understanding of how they worked within the show.
They obviously had no idea how to approach the character of Emma Peel. The casting of Fiennes as Steed was a huge mistake. A very good actor, but totally wrong for a character whose number one attribute is twinkle-in-the-eye British charm.
Kenneth Branagh would have been a much better choice. As it happens, Emma Thompson would have made a fine Mrs. Peel as well, but by that time they weren't a couple any more.
