Review of The Avengers (1998) by Emeka W — 27 Oct 2008
Well... you can't really beat the '60s vibe of the original or Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee. Ms Thurman and Mr Fiennes do very well though as far as the script allows. Possibly about 50 puns too many, but that's ok.
Sean Connery and his villainy is just... bizarre. I think most everyone will agree that Eddie Izzard is SORELY, I say SORELY underused. All he says is "oh fuck"? WHAT? Fun film, generally, but a five year old could understand 90% of it.
The uh, "style" that is such an important characteristic of Peel and Steed is awesome, but the calm, uppity English accents seem to take away the chance for a larger range of expression. PG, even with the solitary "fuck".
... hell, almost G. But not so much as PG-13.
