Review of The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) by Curtis S — 24 Dec 2016
2016 has been a great year for well made horror films (Don't Breathe, Conuring 2, Green Room) and happy to say that this film joins those ranks. Despite it's extreme level of gore, it's only kept to the autopsy procedures performed to our mysterious Jane Doe (which is both fascinating and intense to sit through).
No spoilers but there times where the film reminded me of the remake of Resident Evil on the gamecube when you explore the laboratory under the Spencer Mansion. In other words... the film's cinematography makes strong use of set camera angles to create a true nerve wracking sense of dread.
The final reveal of the plot actually felt well deserved and justified when handling such a tricky mythology, making it authentically fresh and it's own. Emile Hersch and Brian Cox are beyond believable as father & son and the pacing knows how to hit the emotional beats in balance with it's slow build of suspense.
There is obviously the obligatory jump scare and one or two lackluster scares, but overall this is well worth checking out anyone who enjoys the thriller / horror genre.
