Review of The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) by Wes I — 26 Jun 2017
Have to agree with the audience reviews who are puzzled by the above-average reviews this mediocre thriller is getting.
Cox, Hirsch, and Lovibond are just fine (for the most part, until Father-Son go off the rails as the film moves forward) and the camera makes good use of Kelly as the titular character.
But I was disappointed, after being intrigued by those glowing reviews. This is generic and forgettable; no surprises here other than the usual jump-scares, lights flashing, lights going out, radios coming to life to spout crucial information, and books on shelves which just happen to contain facts to shed light on what's going on when the shenanigans ensue.
I'm going to have to believe the good reviews are coming in from inexperienced film-watchers, or anyone who gets spooked at the sound of a door slam. This wasn't anything special at all, save for the novel idea of a corpse getting as much attention as anyone else shown...oh, wait "Swiss Army Man" did that and so did "Weekend at Bernie's." Those films weren't exactly Oscar-winners, either.
"Autopsy" is bland for the most part. You'll spend most of the time waiting for something to happen, and by the time it does you'll just go on to the next red-herring "Boo" scare-attempt. If not for the engaging leads (again, they were fine until flipping out and one character leaves in the most stupidest of fashions) this would be pretty rote and un-engaging. Crazy reviews; don't buy them.
