Review of The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) by Jacob S — 02 Jan 2018
This movie inspired me to write a review unlike any other because it falls into that category of "good until the end".
There's going to be spoilers from here on. I was truly engaged with this movie until about half way in until it started taking on a paranormal approach. It started out on it's way to being a 5 star but lost its way.
The girl is found buried underground and brought in for an autopsy and gradually the characters played by Hirsch and Cox, which by the way are well cast, find that the injuries she's endured are none that could be done without leaving any external markings but she has no external markings to show. I was really into it right up until the lights literally went out... and other bodies from the autopsy room came out of their... chambers.
I was hesitant to watch this film further but it did drag me back in and the suspense killed me. The suspense and camerawork is absolutely fantastic.
As we're getting to the end, Cox's character figures out that the only way to stop the chaos that the girl is causing is for someone to go through the suffering that she endured. He becomes the victim of the suffering and the lights turn back on, the bodies are back in their chambers and all seems well. I thought to myself "oh, that was a pretty good ending. It was dramatic and uh... pretty satisfactory" but oh god, did they ruin it.
Hirsch's character hears voices from the outside of the building (which they were supposedly trapped in by the girl) and he tries opening the door but it wont budge and the people outside are shouting "open up" and with emotion he's shouting "I can't" and then... the man on the other side of the door starts singing "open up your heart" which was a song recurring throughout the movie and he backs away from the door. Then... we get a jumpscare and he falls and dies... literally... seriously, I can't believe they pulled this.
Then bla bla bla the cycle continues bla bla bla. Please don't do this in future, all horror movies.
