Review of The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) by Stuart M — 20 Jun 2017
The film is gruesome, but never exploitively so since the gore all comes as part of a clinical autopsy. The setting is naturally creepy and the film does an amazing job of making an inanimate corpse terrifying.
Seriously, she doesn't move or do anything once. Rather than just relying on jump scares, the film builds up a frightening atmosphere where anything can happen. While freaked out, the leads display an admirably rational approach to the problem.
In fact, the biggest complaint I have is that this approach doesn't really get the payoff it deserves. I mean, they set up a proactive investigative plotline and then drop it after an essentially meaningless reveal.
The ending isn't very impressive.
