Review of The Astronaut's Wife (1999) by John C — 14 Dec 2007
In this very suspensful, sexy, stylish retooling of rosemary's baby, star Charlize Theron as Jillian armacost, a school teacher who is madly in love with her husband Spencer whom she met in college and have been inseperable ever since. Her husband is Spencer Armacost played by Johnny depp, who is a cougeous honored astronaut and are the example of the perfect couple by many of their friends. Spencer and his best friend Alex Strek have been selected to go on a mision to outer space to fix a part on the space station from falling apart. They greeted bny their fellow astronauts and their families as they go into the shuttle and into the space. They arrived to the space station in good condition but while they were outside the space station fixing what had to be fixed Alex strek sees an anomoly in the shape of electricl lights coming their way and he begins to panic as does spencer. Two minutes have quickly gone and as the astroauts fix what tehy ahve to fix and come back home alex begins to wonder what happened to him during those two minutes. They are welcomed home with applause and are taken to a weclome home party. But something is off with the two astronuats. Jillian begins to relaize this right away just by the way her hsuband kissed her. It didn't feel the same and then spencer's best friend Alex began to walk towards spencer yelling and telling him something is wrong and begins to panic and dies of a heart attack in the hospital.
A few weeks later after hius death Jillian begins to see differences in her huband of now and the husband she used to know. The way he eats, the way he talks to her and makes love to her, the way he doesn't socialize with people or his friends, he seems more quiet, it's as if he was mechanical with no human feeling. She begins to tell ehr sister about her husband even though her sister keeps telling that its all in her head she keeps thinking maybe he is not spencer is not who he says he is. On her way out of a shopping mall, she is pulled aside by an exccentric ex- nasa engineer Sherman Reese begins to act all werid on her telling her that there are two minutes unaccounted for when spencer and his friend were in space there are two minutes missing. What happened to them during those two minutes. Before Reese could say anything, a police officer escorts him out of the mall. When Reese is mysteriously killed and her sister is found dead, Jullian worst fears comes to light, maybe her husband died in space and some alien took over his body. In the edn she will have to confront her husband face to face. Will she live or die?
This is very well done thriller with enough thrills to keep you interested and with three very compelling performances from Johnny depp. charlize theron and Joe morton and decent story help to move the movie along besides some plot holes, some campy sequences and an awful ending.
Good if you suspende your disbelief.
Worth watching.
