* 1/2 THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON - In the early 1970's, a man tried to assassinate President Nixon. This film tries to imagine why. Sean Penn plays him as a misfit who never does anything right, but somehow that's society's fault.
The tag line says that the film is "inspired" by actual events, so it's not very accurate. What it is is depressing and somewhat pointless. Opens 12/29.
