Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Jesse J — 24 Jun 2010
Here we go again.
ANOTHER pretentious drag of a movie. This film takes 3 hours to tell a story that isn't interesting at all. The only positives to this dragging film is the cinematography and some decent performances. But largely it's a bunch of scenes with actors talking like deputy dog.
It takes three hours to show Robert Ford going from wannabe to hateful of the man he read about in so many papers and books. As the film goes along, it wants to show us why Jesse James is not the man many wanted him to be. He intimates friends and foes by his mere presence. He is unstable and takes pleasure in keeping his friends worrisome of what he might do next.
But it's never interesting. Partly because the film moves at such a slow pace and partly because Pitt can't convey this type of threat that makes it believable to the viewer. One positive point is after that the Assassination. Watching Ford suffer his fate after the big event is over is by far the best part of the film.
Too bad the 2+ hours before it sucked.
