Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Lee B — 07 Feb 2011
This is by no means a perfect film, but it comes close to it. An intricate study of two characters presented both in negative and positive life's through standout performances from Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck.
The writing is also top-notch, and the cinematography is mesmerising. This film has its flaws, but the last 30 minutes are incredible. We begin to sympathise and understand the motives of these men and that's one of the films strongest truths.
When you already know the ending from a flash forward or even in the title, it's hard to make the film compelling and shocking but this film does it, and does it brilliantly. When the inevitable scene occurs, it leaves you speechless and powerfully moved to the point of desperation and a urge for more.
