Dramatic and quite beautiful, The Assassination of Jesse James is a great vehicle for its talented cast and a well-told story of an American icon. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck are both impressive in the lead roles, while the likes of Jeremy Renner, Paul Schneider and Sam Rockwell round out an equally good supporting ensemble.

Roger Deakins' cinematography is as stunning as ever (has anyone repeatedly captured the American landscape as brilliantly as him?) while Andrew Dominik's writer/director double act is a stark reminder that this guy really needs to make some more movies.

Admittedly the film may be too long and winding for some, but for most the solid storytelling, performances and visuals will be enough to keep you interested to the affecting conclusion.
