Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Patrick R — 11 Jan 2012
It's phenomenal! Opening with what may be the single most gorgeously photographed train robbery sequence ever put to film (however, the whole movie is flat out gorgeous to look at; Roger Deakins rules!), the movie then proceeds to tell a captivating and haunting story about a troubled young man who would assassinate the very man he idolized in his youth.
Filled with poignant themes about the nature of celebrity, stellar performances (has Casey Affleck ever been better; for that matter, has Brad Pitt?), a hauntingly evocative musical score, a pitch perfect voice over narrator and.
..oh, heck, this movie just about has everything. And while the movie runs a long 160 minutes, there is not a single moment in it that could be described as dull. It's just so darn great!
