Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Ryan M — 20 Jun 2012
Long, quiet, contemplative, a movie made for film-fans, people who love to watch real characters interact, both verbally and through subtle body language, "The Assassination of Jesse James" is, in a word, riveting.
From start to finish, narrator Hugh Ross uses language to tell the Legend as director Andrew Dominik and Brad Pitt paint us a picture, and a beautiful picture at that, of the Man. More impressive is Casey Affleck as Robert Ford, an unsettling performance of an unsettled youth, a pathetic young man who seeks celebrity and finds out too late that the rules for attaining such a thing are beyond his understanding.
Sam Rockwell, Paul Schneider, and Jeremy Renner masterfully round out the main cast of outlaws that orbit around the two stars almost unwillingly because it's too late for them to do anything else.
Masterful.
