Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Jeffrey G — 13 Aug 2012
I don't exactly know how to give a star-rating to this film. The cinematography is nothing short of brilliant; Pitt gives a phenomenally modulated performance, alternating seamlessly between tenderness, paranoia, self-revulsion and blood-lust; Affleck is a revelation; the directing is assured; the production design nearly flawless.
..but the pace is simply glacial and the narrative never quite feel coherent to me. It's hugely ambitious, yet it seems that its reach exceeded its grasp.
