Review of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) by Joshua C — 30 Oct 2014
While this isn't the greatest movie I've ever seen, it's definitely right up there as the most compelling movie by far. It had the slow methodic feel of death that was essential in setting the mood for this film.
Dominik purposefully laid out the story in such a way that the almost exhausting 2 1/2 hour runtime establishes incredible tension between the two leads. Brad Pitt has the perfect combination of power and desperation that Jesse James had at the end of his life.
Not to mention Casey Affleck turning in a career-making performance as a man so enthralled by the allure of his mentor he ends up at point he never could have imagined. These two leads are surrounded by a supporting cast for the ages including Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Renner and the always underappreciated Sam Rockwell.
