Review of The Asphalt Jungle (1950) by Slappy M — 23 Apr 2008
Before Inside Man, before Reservoir Dogs, before the Thomas Crowne Affair, there was The Asphalt Jungle. John Huston's urban crime story is a the perfect heist film; there's the plan, the set up, the fall out, and of course, an exploration of each of the characters.
And they ARE characters, not caracitures; each has their hopes, dreams and vices, each has dialogue crafted for them, and though we grow fond of them, and sympathize with them, we never doubt that what they did was wrong, something that many post-code movies didn't get.
