Review of The Artist (2011) by Meredith W — 02 Dec 2012
What a great piece of art! Jean Dujardin gives the performance of the year. No question. Funny, sad, using his body the way silent stars did so well. Though of course, Uggie rules the whole film--he's a true supporting character.
"The Artist" is everything you could possibly want it to be. The story of silent film actor George Valentina's dwindling success in the talkie era, isn't anything revolutionary or surprising, but it really doesn't have to be.
And even though it draws on themes from "Singing in the Rain", it has beauty and humanity to complement its humour.
