Review of The Artist (2011) by Katherine S — 10 Dec 2012
Jean Dujardin is wonderful in this film. And the ambience is amazingly authentic, but Berenice Bejo seems entirely miscast as Peppy. Not her fault, really. But her appearance is not at all what was considered the standard of beauty for the times.
Women with small jaws, mouths, hands and feet were the ideal. She has a very 1960s look, on the other hand, and it's jarring. Whoever did the casting must have loved women with strong jaws, huge toothy grins and lanky bodies because they appear throughout -- even among the extras.
If you closely watch 1920s movies you will see that women with those characteristics were only cast in comic roles. Not a judgment on personal appearance, but only on changing public tastes.
