Review of The Artist (2011) by Joshua B — 14 Jan 2013
The Artist is undeniable Oscar bait, and one that caught the big fish. Were it not a modern tribute to the silent era and a movie about the movies, I do not think The Artist would have garnered as much attention during awards season as it did.
But despite its being overpraised, and despite the slight nature of the exercise, the story is surprisingly affecting, and undeniably charming. Bérénice Bejo's peppy beauty and Jean Dujardin's infection smile are winningly old-fashioned, but neither performance feels parodic, but rather genuine and committed.
Best Picture of the year? Nah, but certainly a very good one.
