Review of The Artist (2011) by Thomas P — 11 Sep 2013
Brilliant, fresh spontaneity - surprisingly within the confines of a 20's Hollywood B&W film. A Master Class on film making - its Completely visual with only a gentle 20's-like soundtrack throughout. They flow thru the story with perfect pitch in the acting and tone, and there's a sheer joy that's percolating throughout.
The camaraderie of the entire ensemble cast shines thru - they are clearly in their element here:
They effortlessly float from serious to tongue-in-cheek to physical comedy,.
The wide-eyed innocence, comedic stunts, nudges and glances, the exuberance, and the touches of genuine goofiness - it's so refreshing to see, and their gentle nuances in tandem with the director's warm handling adds a sweet nostalgic, shimmery glow.
*This is what cinema is supposed to be!*.
The story is a nod to A Star Is Born, the emotion is roaring 20's, and acting is spot-on perfect - from reserved to introspective to over-the-top - the perfect pitch visual charm makes this like a pleasant dream that stays with you, keeping you smerking and uplifted long after.
They do introduce sound, thats brilliant too.
My highest recommendation for this wise, telling and buoyant movie - no murky, haunting, heaviness here. It has depth and tenderness, and then resolution.
*6* out of 5 high-flying flapper kicks..
