Review of The Artist (2011) by Liam C — 16 Nov 2013
One of the most original films to come out of Hollywood in many years and funnily enough by doing nothing original at all! Just by going back to when things were simpler in films and taking what made it golden, Michel manages to make a masterpiece.
It's a classic film, makes you laugh, makes you cry and all the other emotions in-between. It's such a funny romantic story line where the main characters probably spend about a total of five minutes on screen together with each other.
You really care about all the characters in this and it just takes you away with what its doing. This film really had to be done right because if it was not the consensus would be something like 'it gets points for its creativity but.
..' and then I see many others trying to copy the films style and then it is not original anymore. But, this movie did it amazing, told its story, will be remembered for ever and we move on, remembering it fondly.
This movie is a movie in a movie in a way, its very smart. The only negative I have with it is an actor in it, Malcolm McDowell, he has such high billing in the open credits and then I thought that this might be the movie that rejuvenates his career, albeit far too late and he was only in it about 5 minutes! If that!.
He was in one of the most influential films ever, A Clockwork Orange, giving a brilliant performance and then he kind of disappeared forever. Anyway, enough about that. An amazing film that takes you away with it.
Spellbinding.
