Review of The Artist (2011) by Rob L — 11 Nov 2012
I get it. I understand the appeal and the gorgeousness of the glorious black and white. I get that the performances were strong and watchable. I get how it sang a gentle love song to the origins of movies.
I get all that and yet, I do not get this movie. Dudjardin and Bejo are magical on screen together. Their chemistry was palpable. So. Why did the movie spend so much energy keeping them apart? I understand Valentin was sad.
Then really sad. Then really really sad. I get the triumph of his salvation. I guess I just thought it was overlong and boring. Maybe I didn't really get it at all.
