Review of The Artist (2011) by Nikki L — 01 Jan 2013
Call me crazy, but I think The Artist is the most overrated film of 2011. It's just nostalgia masked as "art." Don't get me wrong, I've been entertained by silent films and appreciated them for the innovation they were for their time (think "The Goucho"), but I excpected The Artist to be more and to have more to offer.
It does pay homage to that era, but we do live in a world of technology where we can hear the actors talk, and it is actually MORE challenging to have to concentrate on verbals and nonverbals at the same time.
The premis of The Artist is interesting, but it's excecution is dull and unimaginative, in my opinion.
