Review of The Artist (2011) by Anthony T — 04 Mar 2013
Look what's become of you.
A silent movie star meets an up and coming actress and falls in love. He keeps her at an arms distance because he is married but they have a mutual attraction that is very apparent. As the silent film industry comes to an end and talking pictures become the new wave, the silent film star sees his star dimming. Meanwhile, the young girl becomes more and more famous. As their career's cross paths it may be the young girl that keep's the silent film star's life worth living.
"Don't laugh. That's the future.".
"If that's the future, you can have it.".
Michel Hazanavicius, director of The Players and the upcoming In the Garden of Beasts, delivers The Artist. The storyline for this picture is so good and well written. The unique nature of this silent film along with the ironic plot of the end of the silent genre was well done. The acting was also first rate and the cast includes Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Berenice Bejo, James Cromwell, and Penelope Ann Miller.
"Who's that girl? That's the question on everyone's lips. Who indeed?".
The Artist is a movie I finally got around to seeing off Netflix. I heard this was a great picture some time ago and was not disappointed. I was thoroughly impressed by the story and all of the sub plots. The character development was also excellent. I strongly recommend seeing this picture and this may be worth adding to your DVD collection.
"The name's Miller. Peppy Miller.".
Grade: A.
