Review of The Art of Travel (2008) by Skyler W — 28 Nov 2008
I am split on 'The Art of Travel.' This was close to a film idea that I had, and I think I would have done it a lot differently. I was happy because it was really realistic at time, and then at others at seemed to have to embody a National Lampoon's flick--and not a good one like Vacation, more like Dorm Daze 2.
It also felt like a comedy at times and it wasn't really a comedy, or at least if it was it wasn't funny. There were some shots at Machu Picchu that I really thought were stunning, but that seemed liked the only good cinematography.
At times there were some good pieces of dialogue, but at others it was absolutely dreadful. I especially loved the monologue at the end of the film. It didn't really balance out though, as most of the film was about the trek through the jungle, and yet that, even though it was symbolic, wasn't too important to the story.
I found that it made up for some of the films flaws with the ending, and I in no way so it coming. Also, he's suposta be only 18 at the start oof the film and only 20 when it ends? Come on. Overall, I'm split.
I really liked parts of this film--loved certain parts. On the other hand, it was of a pretty bad quality and was lacking in so many areas. See for yourself. I think that someone who has traveled before--like myself--will resonate with it more than someone who has never left the state.
You decide.
