I wonder if the Lincoln University trustees of the Barnes Foundation considered asking a judge to permit them to sell $50 or $100 million of paintings (out of what they then considered to be worth about $5 billion) to provide the endowment they needed.
Possibly they thought it wrong in principal, but the result was losing control completely.
