Review of The Art of Getting By (2011) by Joe M — 22 Jun 2011
"The Art of Getting By" is a feel-good indie that anyone can relate to, whether they are in their teens or grandparents. It is realistic, inspiring, and interesting. All of the characters have something to offer and are properly developed: a lonely senior in high school who is smarter than people think he is, believably played by Freddie Highmore, a girl who is looking for something (or someone) real that she can connect to, played by Emma Roberts, a mother struggling economically and with her marriage, high school teachers who want the best for their students, unreal friends, a single mother... there are so many characters that revolve around the two protagonists that support their story very well.
The lighting is very natural and fit for each situation and the camera angles are simple and relevant.
This is definitely one of the top five movies of this year so far, and it is movies such as this one that excite me about going to the movies, when you really don't know what to expect, but you hope it will be worth it, and it ends up being more than that.
