Review of The Arrested Development Documentary Project (2013) by Beeksie C — 05 Jun 2013
The comedy is a little more subtle in these episodes so far (I'm writing this as of finishing the 6th episode), so you really have to be paying attention. Whereas, in the original series, there were plenty of not-so-subtle jokes (chicken dance, Lucille's one-liners, puns about Buster's hand, etc.), in case you missed the subtle ones, these episodes seem to play a little more to those who were real fanatics of the original and noticed every little subtle callback in the background. Most of the Bluth family appears at least once, in a short scene or two, in every episode, presumably building up to a larger reunion in the finale. I'm surprised the characters work as well on their own as they do. Lots of surprise cameos so far too, but most of them are distracting and annoying -- especially Kristen Wiig and Seth Rogan as young Lucille and George Sr. who are both completely miscast. (My favorite cameos come from an unexpected place: Almost the entire cast of short-lived series Outsourced appears in one episode. Uncertain what the connection to that show is, but it couldn't have been a coincidence). Overall, good stuff if you like smart, subtle, clever humor.
UPDATE: I've now watched 10 episodes. I stand by the above.
