Review of The Aristocrats (2005) by Ryan V — 12 May 2012
This documentary is about "The Aristocrats", an old joke that dates back to the salad days of vaudeville. The beginning and the end of the joke always remain the same, but the middle part is left open-ended and its purpose is to allow the teller to be as vulgar, crude, depraved, and nasty as possible.
This documentary traces the history of the joke and brings in numerous comedians to tell their own variation of it. The audience gets to see comedic heavy hitters such as Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, George Carlin, Sarah Silverman, Martin Mull, Eddie Izzard, and many others.
The film is much more probing and insightful than one may initially assume, but it does suffer under the cliche that examining a joke can potentially remove its humor.
