Review of The Aristocats (1970) by Jasper Y — 23 Jan 2014
The Aristocats isn't a bad film, really, kids will definitely enjoy this early 70s Disney picture, but to adults the film remains boring and lifeless, with extremely unlikable characters and a poor storyline.
A family of cats belonging to an elderly wealth consuming woman become lost when the woman's scheming butler, Edgar, leaves them stranded by a river bank. As they journey back home, they meet the alley cat, Thomas O'Malley and his friends, a scatting jazz band filled with cats. The ending is very predictable and the film is so slow moving and filled with scenes not vital to the story that adults will not enjoy this one, this was around the point in the 1970s and 1980s where Disney's downfall began and picked up during the late 1980s with The Little Mermaid, spawning a glorious whole decade for Disney afterwards.
Like I said, The Aristocats isn't bad at all, just very boring for the more mature audiences. This one is definitely targetted for the kiddies and may not be as enjoyable as the Disney Renaissance era's string of successful films. A poor premise, bland characters, a bad storyline, but I would give it an "in between" rating because the kids will like it for its vast musical numbers and colorful scenery.
