Review of The Aristocats (1970) by Adrian B — 11 Jan 2011
It is true to the fact that I really enjoyed this classic when I was younger. Unfortunately, a re-watch of this apparent masterpiece, as the video collection states on the cover, yields a less likable animated feature from Disney.
It is okay, not great. The film, which borrows heavily from the 101 Dalmatians, with the addition of songs, follows the story of four cats who are oddly enough inheriting the valuables of their master, when she will die, and then are kidnapped by her butler, who would get the fortune after cats die, which he assumes are in more century later.
The film is little too silly for families to watch. The songs are sadly un-listenable and the animation is okay, nothing compared to most other works. My main concerns dwell upon the fact viewers may forget this is taken place in France, when very few characters even have French accents (at least the geese were honest of being from the U.
K.). Most of them have American accents, which is not good! Eva Gabor's voice of the mother cat sounds like Grace Kelly (Gabor is funny enough Hungarian). It is not a great film from the vast collection of Disney.
Maybe appropriate for little ones; not great for families or older ones. Also, the 101 Dalmatians is vastly superior to this almost plagiarized Disney vehicle.
