Review of The Apostle (1997) by David T — 20 Aug 2007
This movie threatens to descend into stereoytype, but ends up as a very kind and accurate portrayal of Southern Life without being bogus-stereotypical-hominy. The character is sometimes hypocrtical but the move is not. I love Duvall's confrontation with Billy Bob. Again, in the end, the Apostle gets what he prays for, when he baptized himself anew and surrendered to the will of Jesus. I know it sounds cheesy, but it is not. Love, devotion, surrender.
Look for a cameo by Billy Joe Shaver.
