Review of The Apostle (1997) by Scott W — 26 Feb 2010
I almost didn't write a review of this film as I came into it with a little too much personal baggage. You see, it was a little difficult to see as a piece of fiction. Those who know me very well know that I'm a soft-hearted heathen.
What most people don't know is how much I've been surrounded by charismatic Christians with chips on their shoulders throughout the course of my life. While this deals with a particular breed of Christianity, (old-fashioned, southern, fire & brimstone revival) it is VERY, VERY real.
I've seen so many films try to emulate the feeling of a charismatic Christian service, and it's something you just can't fake. You either KNOW what it feels like or you don't. So many films (I'm looking at YOU, Book of Eli) have the wind sucked out of them in my eyes due to lack of authenticity in the scripture/motivations/behaviors of the supposedly god-fearing characters.
In this film, just like with many real charismatics, the actions of the lead character left me a little uneasy from time to time. Somehow, I doubt anyone else would feel that way, though. I just can't rightfully judge this as a movie because it felt too much like church.
REAL church. The kind that takes all day, wears you out, and has you thinking immideately afterward - church is out, let's EAT! Amen.
