Review of The Apartment (1960) by Bob W — 13 May 2009
Jack Lemmon's approach to Shirley MacLaine wouldn't be considered cute these days, instead it would warrant a restraining order. Seriously, how would you feel if a guy you hardly knew said he knew everything about you and proceeded to rattle off all of your personal info (ht/wt/address/medical history/family) lol? With that being said this was a terrific movie.
A lot more serious than I anticipated, but it still has its comedic moments. Lemmon's character is one that I think many guys can identify with. He's a hard worker, nice guy, but gets walked on and loses the girl he wants most.
Lemmon's case was extreme as he had 5 different bosses using his apartment as a sex pad, and if he said no then he gets fired. A different kind of romance film that would still work very well today because times might change, but people do not.
This has more heartbreak than uplift, but that's life a lot of time. Just a great story with some real drama and very good acting. Don't hate on black and white, check this out.
