Review of The Apartment (1960) by Jeremy S — 28 Jan 2010
I had heard that this film was a romantic comedy, but as I watched the comedy almost shrank to irrelevance as the deep saddness rose. Jack Lemmon is perfect as always and Shirley MacLaine is so sweet and innocent that you cannot help but wonder at her current demeanor.
If anything this film is a truly heart aching romance that takes you on a journey of laughs, pity, sorrow and love. Amazingly winner of Academy Awards for Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay.
Billy Wilder has to be one of the all time great directors and king of famous last lines: "Shut up and deal".
