Review of The Apartment (1960) by Joel S — 13 Oct 2010
People can champion Jimmy Stewart all they want, but to me, the ultimate embodiment of the "everyday man" is Jack Lemmon. Here's the down-and-outer you root for from the beginning: unaffected, sure in his comedic timing, but nonetheless a convincing subordinate turned hero.
The relationship that grows between him and Shirley MacLaine is tender and lacking in hostility but never in believability. Their chemistry is undeniable, and MacLaine brings depth and grace to what could have been a throwaway role.
Another Billy Wilder classic.
