Review of The Apartment (1960) by Colm M — 10 Apr 2011
In Empires 500 greatest movies of all time list. This flick is all about Shirley MacLaine. Great performance by her that hearkens back to an earlier era of the movies. This is because she is under the direction of the great Billy Wilder.
Lemon plays his usual neurotic character extemely well. The office politics is still relevant, the musical score will stay with you for a long time and there are many classic scenes. But I'm afraid Lemons character made this movie less enjoyable for me.
He plays his role to perfection. The problem is that his character is a spineless smuck and so I found Mr. Baxter extremely annoying. He may redeem himself in the end but by then for me it was too late.
What Fran could have seen in Mr. Baxter, other than his good nature, is beyond me. Can you tell I got a thing for Fran? Cuteness personified. Extemely smart and satirical storyline though and it was great to get lost in this old movie for a couple of hours but I did find it to be a little too long.
Times have changed a lot in Hollywood since then and political correctness obviously came later. Watch out for the black shoe shine man and the black cleaner whom Mr. Baxter plops a hat on as he enters the elevator.
