Review of The Apartment (1960) by Paul J — 28 Dec 2011
Wilder's bold comedy about infidelity, loneliness and suicide. Lemmon and MacLaine are a perfect match and my heart goes out to Baxter. Wilder uses the cinemascope frame to illustrate the emptiness in everyone's lives.
(Interestingly, Antonioni was doing the exact same thing over in Italy with L'Avventura.) There is such pathos throughout this movie yet it's so utterly romantic. Thankfully, it never gets too sentimental because Wilder cynicism is intake.
Considering the time, it's remarkable just how sordid everything is. Debauchery, shallowness, corporate sharks and empty sex. And they call this a comedy?
