Review of The Apartment (1960) by Scott G — 04 Oct 2012
Billy Wilder's dark comedy, The Apartment is a must see for any devotee of one of its red headed step children, Madmen. Not as silly or madcap as his previous picture, Some like It Hot, The Apartment takes a wry look at the libidinous lives of insurance executives through the eyes of Wilder's trademark manic everyman, Jack Lemmon. Ironically, Fred MacMurry is recast as Wilder's insurance industry bad boy. Unlike, Some Like It Hot - or Double Indemnity, for that matter - The Apartment has a message in its madness. Couched in humor, Wilder explores serious the topics of corporate ambition, big city infidelity, and suicide. Perhaps because of its adult themes or underlying sadness, The Apartment isn't as well-known as it should be.
Give this film the number one spot on your Netflix queue; this film is as memorable and immortal as Sunset Boulevard.
