Review of The Apartment (1960) by Tanvir M — 02 Feb 2013
Now ,this is a classic that holds up well even 53 years of release. Doesn't feel dated in its expression of human emotions and how ambition and love play off against one another. For me, it was a poignant story of urban alienation and loneliness resulting from the soulless corporatisation and also a debunking of the myth of a sanitised 50's as projected by majority of films.
Lemmon and Maclaine are both extraordinary in their sensitive performance of lost souls searching for a home in the urban jungle. I was earlier impressed by the Indian film 'Life in a Metro', but looking at this original which 'inspired' that film, that one only turns out to be a pale pretender and nothing else.
Now I am inspired to seek out the black and white classics from the yester years.
