Review of The Angry Birds Movie (2016) by Jack F — 25 Jun 2016

So what do I think of this video game movie. Well the best thing I can say about the movie is that it wasn't god awful. Now I said this in my Warcraft review I don't hate video game movies there are a few that I like Mortal Combat, Wreck It Ralph, Final Fantasy Advent Children, and for what it was Ratchet and Clank was an alright movie. But this is my opinion so all I'm asking is that you don't judge me.

There is some pretty good stuff here for example. The voice acting in this movie is amazing. Each and every one of the cast really do give it their all. Ironically Jason Sudeikis as the main protagonist Red gives the best performance in my opinion and easily one of the funniest of the year. As for the rest of the cast there pretty awesome in this movie as well in particularly Bill Hader as the main villain of the movie Leonard. His performance came off as both really funny and very enjoyable. I'll also say that the animation in this movie is amazing. Each and every one of those feathers felt real there was not one single scene where the animation looked awful and admittedly whenever a character cracked a joke I found myself laughing my but off. This movie has some of the best slapstick comedy I've heard in a while. Not to mention the Easter eggs and references to the games are amazing.

Those are things that I liked about the movie so it ain't all bad there is some good. However Angry Birds is in no stretch a good movie.

For starters while the voice acting is amazing a lot of the characters come off as either annoying or just unlikable. For example Red himself he started off as really good character but the more the film delved into the more cynical side of things the more repetitive and stupid it became and in the end it just did not do anything for and started to kind of dislike the character the more they did this. I also found Josh Gad as Chuck to be particularly annoying. He didn't do much in the film either. For the majority he was in the film it just felt like he was just there for comic relief. I also thought that a lot of the characters in the movie were really under developed and for example Bomb there was one seen where they tried to flesh him out a little more but other than that one scene that is really about it no attempt is made to develop the character.

Admittedly for the majority of the movie I did not think I was watching an Angry Birds movie a lot of the time it really didn't feel like it. Not a lot happened that made me feel like I was watching an Angry Birds movie. In fact that only time I felt I was watching an actual angry bird's movie was the first few minutes of the finale those few minutes were the only part of the movie where I felt like I was watching an angry birds. It captured pretty much everything that made the games so enjoyable. But other than that there's not a lot. In fact for the most part I thought I was watching a really bin there done that story about someone who is hated by his entire village and that is another issue I had with the movie it felt really been there done that like I'd seen this in other movies before.

Another thing I had with this movie is the visual comedy. The comedy that came from dialogue is one of the best parts of this movie but the visual comedy came out as...Really disturbing and not funny I won't tell you which pacific scenes I'm talking about because trust me you'll know when you seem them. trust me their grose as heck.

There also alot of references to other movies and while some of them were pretty good alot of them felt like they ripping it off for example this movie litterally ripped off the Quicksilver scene from X men Days of Future Past and I know that it wasn't intended to feel that way but thats what it felt like to me.

Angry Birds may be fun for farts and giggles but aside from that there really isn't much else going from it. and yes I understand that how hard it is to transfer an Iphone app into a featuire length movie and yes they clearly tried there hardest with this one but I persoanlly did not like this film it's not god awful and thankfully it's not the worst movie i've scene all year but it's not one I would recommend to anyone.
