Review of The Angels' Share (2012) by Yann F — 12 Nov 2012
I don't understand why this is being touted as a shift of tone for Loach because it is deeply grounded in the usual realism and squalor of those born into the hardest elements of urban existence and it is peppered with the comedy that I feel is evident in many of his films.
Sure this one has a more uplifting ending than many of the others - but the tone actually felt much the same. As a Scot I had mixed feelings about seeing this, but I was strangely comforted by the fact that a film with such a surface Scottishness was handled in Loach's usual evenhanded way.
