Review of The Angels' Share (2012) by Amilcar A — 11 May 2013
Every so often I go the the theater with no movie in mind and run into something incredible. Many great movies I've seen have come this way. Interestingly, most are European and mainly British. How can I forget Still Crazy, Green Fingers and to a lesser degree Waking Ned Devine.
The Angel's Share is a fabulous movie about a group of lowly criminals that are out of luck. Outside of the main character who was a danger to society, the rest are mostly losers that are just plain bad at everything, even crime. As part of their community service, they become friendly and embark in a crazy adventure to steal some prime whiskey. Yes, I'm not making this up. It's this loony.
This movie is not loaded with stars and expensive props. In fact I don't even remember any of the main actors, unless they played some secondary character in another movie. Yet this is what makes it so good. All the main characters are real people. The kind of folk you would meet on the street or at the bar. Except Albert. He is plainly the stupidest human being in Scotland. He is beyond comical and ridiculous at the same time.
As should be expected, no one will watch this movie outside the 7 people in the theater yesterday. It's truly unfortunate since it's better than anything else playing these days.
