Review of The Andromeda Strain (1971) by Bheema D — 30 Dec 2013
It's a very unbalanced movie. It has excellent pacing and suspense, the music is barely present or intrusive (giving a 2001 vibe), the camera work is great, and the editing techniques used to show more than one thing at the same time are unique and impressive.
70% of the time, this movie is a king of "show don't tell." Another painful 30% of the time, it's the king of exposition flying through the actor's mouths. Not to mention, there are deus ex machinas flying everywhere and the age of movie is immediately visible.
Hell, it almost looks more like 1966 than it does 1971. But I must stress, I was at the edge of my seat with this movie, fully engaged. But unfortunately it suffers from enough problems that it can't make the A grade, but it still earns a solid B+.
