Review of The Americanization of Emily (1964) by Edith N — 02 Nov 2009
Great anti-war movie. James Garner delivers a bravura performance as the "proud to be a coward" Navy Commander who through no fault of his own gets assigned to Omaha Beach on D-Day. Despite his best efforts Garner goes and miraculously survives.
The movie shows the hypocrisy and heroism of war and how any human endeavor is equal parts humbug and heroism. Julie Andrews is phenomenal as Emily whose own sacrifices are born with cheerful resignation.
Melvyn Douglas steals the movie as the Admiral that goes a bit off and ultimately puts Garner in harms way. Great cast, great acting. A gem of a movie.
