Review of The American President (1995) by Daniel H — 18 Oct 2007
Watching this on late night tv for what must be the third time, I realize that I actually love it much more than I've ever admitted to myself. It's mainstream liberal Hollywood fantasy, but it just plain works.
The script is smart, funny and engaging, the leads are appealing, and the story is satisfying and fulfills the promise of its conceit. It's also the last good film that Rob Reiner made after a string of great classic comedies, before the bad run he hasn't yet emerged from - and in a way, THIS is the original pilot episode for The West Wing - you can see how the whole genesis, tone and heart of that show was established here.
For a good romantic comedy with brains and important political themes beneath the glitter, this is highly recommended, even if I do still feel a little strange for saying it out loud.
