Intelligent, witty, romantic comedies set in the political arena are quite rare in Hollywood, but maybe they should try more often. The film boasts a great script by Aaron Sorkin (of later West Wing fame), who demonstrates his deft ability at penetrating the political circle and revealing the ordinary qualities of the people within.
The American President hits every note perfectly and succeeds in charming the pants off the theater-goer. Iit certainly helps when Sorkin has an incredible ensemble cast (particularly Michael Douglas and Martin Sheen) that easily manages the balance of humor and politics.
The only disappointment is the cliched resolution at the end, which feels forced and out of place. A movie this smart deserves better.
